I have not visited World of Warcraft since I left St. Maarten in June of '09.
I missed the game for a while, then found that I no longer missed WoW, but I did miss my friends, especially those from the guild, Elders of Legend.
The guild is still going strong, as I keep in contact with the current guild leader, Nan.
Well done Nan!

I miss WoW!!
I cannot buy a gamecard or the expansion here, for the US servers. South Africa falls into the Euro servers.
As I dont have a credit rating, and am self employed, I cannot get a credit card. However, I can get a "special" card after March 5, which is my 60th birthday. (The banks here in SA are weird!)

The other issue is the quality of Internet here. There is no cable Internet. WiFi Internet is in its infancy. The so-called broadband is via normal phone lines. The packet loss is just plain bad.

So, some time in March I will be trying out some options.

I am in the process of moving to Johannesburg, South Africa.
At the moment I do not have Internet, and will not have Internet in South Africa until settled. That may be late July.

People play World of Warcraft for:

Socializing with real-life or in-game friends
Exploring the virtual world
Competing against real or virtual opponents
Entertainment, relaxation
Accomplishment that comes from in-game achievement.

Elders of Legend is different to most guilds in that we have an age restriction of 25 years old.
We are a casual-style guild with raiders, dungeoners, and those that prefer not to go into instances.
We have many couples, parent and "child", and grandparents.
I have not bothered with working out our average age, suffice to say I, the Guild Leader, am 59 years old.
Our gender makeup is 60% male, 40% female. (Compared to the standard 84/16!)
Elders of Legend has few rules.

PG13 - Swearing will have one warning, and one only
Courtesy - Harassment - one warning. Sexual Harassment - instant dismissal, and a note to Blizzard.

It may seem like the average age for World of Warcraft is 14 years old, but according to some surveys, 84 percent of "World of Warcraft" players are male, and 16 percent are female. The average player's age is 28, and female players tend to be a few years older than male players. Regardless of their gender, players spend an average of 21 to 22 hours a week playing the game

Note: Asked many times... How do you know the person is really over 25?
This is very easy. New members have a 14 day Initiate period. The guild will soon know if the new person is really mature enough to stay with the guild. How? Speech and actions!

Feb update

Back to having issues with my Internet service. My latency in WoW has gone from the 300's to between 600 - 1200ms, which is no good for grouping.
Basicly, Bikutanda the level 80 Hunter does the fishing and cooking dailies, runs a skinning route in Scholozar Basin, then thats it.
I made a new Tauren Hunter, and have been running him mostly. The idea is to go with what he gets from quests and drops, without twinking. I do have Bikutanda make leather gear now and then.
A few weeks ago, I dusted my level 29 Rogue. This Rogue was my pure pvp character. However, for some reason the level 29 battlegroups are not as popular as before. The waits in the queue would be longer than 30 minutes. Soooo, I took him out questing. I tried a few random dungeons, but the latency issue is very bad for a contact melee type.
The baby Hunter is level 28, and the Rogue is level 32.
I plan to level these 2 up in different zones, to avoid boredom.

Bikutanda is no longer a Troll!
Yah, he is now an ORC.
I have not liked the forever-stooping-and-stretching look of the Troll. In fact it became annoying to look at this character from the back. I splurged on the $25.00 and took the race change.
I actually like the Orc, because of the size and most animations. Orcs need to have some work done on the gun-shooting animation! Its pretty bad.

I will tru scrounge up some before and after images.

Smoky, the Spirit Beast.

I made the comment in the previous post that I had left the Spirit Beast in the stables, as it was not doing the DPS I expect from a hard-to-get exotic beast.

Well, last night, we did some 5 man dungeons with 2 inexperienced guild members..
We ran Violet Hold on normal, resetting the instance until the level 79 dinged level 80.
We had no healer. We had 3 experienced members, a tanking paladin, a rogue and a hunter. The other 2 were a paladin and a warrior.

Well, I was a little surprised with my pets.
Usually, I take a wolf to instances. However, I had dumped the wolf/worg with the flaming red feet and have Ironjaw. This wolf is still leveling up, so I took the devilsaur. As I suspected, and have read, the devilsaur has problems. He seems to take a lot of damage. I had to heal a lot, and she died once.
I switched to the spirit beast, Smoky, and saw that I had to hardly heal!
Smoky did well! I was rather surprised about this.

I must admit I am not a theorycrafter, and don't keep up with changes. Obviously the Spirit Beast is not that lacking as a good BM pet anymore. In my opinion, the exotic Spirit Beasts should be the top pet as a DPS pet.

YAY Smoky!

I will be taking Smoky out a lot more now. I am partial to cat pets, and Smoky IS a cat!

Elders of Legend

Elders of Legend was formed as a guild on June 15, 2007, on the Nazgrel server.

The guild was founded by 3 people that migrated from Everquest, where I (as Saanlem) had a guild where the minimum age requirement was 25 years old. This was rather successful, where Mystic Crystal became the 4th largest on the server.
We wanted the same style guild, no pressures, no raid requirements. The credo from the Everquest guild was one that I transplanted to Elders of Legend.

" * We are a guild that places the highest values on courtesy, respect, mutual support, and fun. Our members come to one another's aid and to the aid of anyone of honor. We want to be known as the guild that "gets it" -- the guild that understands the real purpose of World of Warcraft®. We want to return to the fun and relaxation of playing. We are first and foremost a family.
* We are, on average, a more "mature" guild than many. That is a nice way of saying that the average age of guild members tends to be higher than other guilds. We expect a fairly high level of maturity in words and actions. Guild chat, and forum posts should be PG13.
* We are a casual guild, not a raid guild.
* We are not a high-pressure guild. Some guilds put a lot of pressure on members to participate in raids, whether they really want to or not. While we hope you will want to participate in guild events with your brothers and sisters, we do not want you to do anything you don't want to do. That is against the principle of 'fun'. Feel like playing your alts instead of your main? Rather tradeskill than grind experience? That is always YOUR decision. "

Aye, Bikutanda finally dinged level 77, and got the cold water oops, weather flying.

Several things have been going on in my world, so WoW has taken the back burner for a while.

Dengue Fever

Aye, dengue fever is now rampid in the Caribbean. I got the bug 2 weeks ago. Nasty!
Playing on the computer was not on the cards, nor was much of anything else, really. The Doc says I should be better by this weekend.

Pilgrimage

Bikutanda will go on a walk. The pilgrimage will be to "The Shrine of the Fallen" in the Barrens, thence onward to Mulgore, to the quest-giver of "Kyle's Gone Missing".

At the "Shrine of the Fallen" tribute will be made to those that have fallen, known and unknown.

In Mulgore, the quest "Kyle's Gone Missing" was designed by Ezra Chatterton,(Ephoenix), who died recently from a brain tumor. The voice is Ezra's voice, made during a "Make a Wish" Foundations visit to Blizzard. More here and here.

Guild - boggle!

Aye, its pretty amazing!
Elders of Legend (EoL) is a non-raiding casual guild.

I read a lot of blogs and have seen comments on drops in attendance of guilds.
Some lose to raiding guilds.
Some lose to WoW apathy.
Some lose to the pre expansion dropoff.
Most lose to the summer dropoff.

EoL has suffered all that, BUT is actually growing in members. WTG!
EoL has a policy that members that have not played for 3 months are dropped from the guild. (unless the member asks for a LOA and gives a good, valid reason). We do not want inflated numbers.

Good on you Elders of Legend!

(and to think at one stage I had plans to prune the numbers to around 200, LOL)
